Ella Jorgensen's Passion for Plants

When UNL horticulture student Ella Jorgensen walks through a garden, she doesn’t just see petals and stems — she sees possibility. Growing up in Cortland, Nebraska, Ella learned early how plants connect people, creativity, and place. After transferring to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, her passion for horticulture flourished, catching the attention of professors and greenhouse professionals alike. While working at Campbell’s Nursery, Ella noticed how many beautiful flowers were removed during routine plant care. Instead of letting them go to waste, she began pressing, preserving, and transforming them into earrings, stickers, portraits, and other botanical art pieces. Now, through her small business — Crusty Leaf Company — Ella gives discarded petals a second life, turning greenhouse “waste” into handmade works of art.
